The île d’Oléron (Oléron Island) is one of the best known islands of Charente Maritime. It is the largest metropolitan island after Corsica and it enjoys a high rate of sunshine.
The island of Oléron is one of the most famous islands of Charente Maritime (with the island of Ré, the island of Aix, the island Madame) located north of la pointe espagnole, and not far from Marennes , La Tremblade, Ronce-les Bains, and further on Royan, Fouras and La Rochelle.
It is the largest metropolitan island after Corsica and it enjoys a high rate of sunshine. It is a favorite destination to relax on beautiful beaches, or take walks in the forest.
It has beautiful sandy beaches, but also fortified structures designed by Vauban, such as the Château d’Oléron. The main towns are St Pierre d´Oléron, Château d´Oléron, Grand Village.
Like the Ile de Ré, it is now accessible by a bridge that passes through the town of Marennes and above the oyster farms and the Fort Louvois. At the end of the island is the Chassiron lighthouse, on the point of the same name.
Château d’Oléron: Choose the Château d’Oléron for its proximity to the mainland, visit Rochefort, or Royan. But also its lively and colorful little center.
Grand Village Plage: Located less than 10 minutes from the bridge, Grand Village Plage is an ideal destination for enjoying the beach and the forest.
St Pierre d’Oléron, is the capital of the island and is located in its center. In the town, is La Côtinière, a village known for its artisanal fishing port, and its entertainment.
Chassiron, is located in the north of the island and is ideal for enjoying the turquoise water and the tranquility of the area. Don’t miss the famous Chassiron lighthouse.
